We were bored and we were young With a gas can and a pick up truck On a marsh road in the dead of night Like dogs out on the hunt. A car parked in the reeds No driver to be seen No plates, a door ajar Abandoned to the weeds. We were bored and we were young With a gas trail and matches struck And in the mirror as we drove off It burned like a blazing sun.

You can finally smoke in your room And drink all night beneath the colored lights Sleep in ‘til noon Keep the TV on for the sound of another voice Remember to rejoice Remember to be proud. No rules No goals No obligations No referrals Hang your posters on the wall Ignore the dust and stains and footsteps down the hall. Throwing bottles off the roof And lighting up your smokes on the kitchen stove Saying you’ll quit soon Keep the heat down for the cost of the winter bill Dress against the chill And radiator’s knock.

No Big Crime 04:58
Stolen cigarettes I tucked you away Pilfered from the purses And reserved for that day To smoke on the rooftops of academic halls One last salute Stamp it out and move on It’s no big crime Don’t need forgiveness It’s no big crime If there ain’t a victim. Four dollar scam And goods pushed up my sleeve No grand gestures now Just petty victories Not quite so brazen, not quite so proud To live on the boundaries you first must learn how It’s no big crime Don’t need forgiveness It’s no big crime If there ain’t a witness Could you pay the price? Could you sleep at night? Could you make it right? Could you justify? There’s wealth in your hands When it’s free within your reach Won’t you recognize your greed And live within your means? Now spy the young kid case the joint Walking down the aisle Pocketing a bottle But all you’ll do is smile Cuz it’s no big crime Don’t need forgiveness It’s no big crime If there ain’t a witness.

The staircase load, cinder block holds, and blown wedge The blistered hands, the duct taped stands, and coated heads The moment might be brief but that’s the score Kids file in with hands stamped at the door For a chance to dance and move across the floor Mouthing the lines and bobbing in time because of the kick drum Crossed out lines of all the lies we’re raised on Eat well, sleep well, pay your debts, and save some. The neighborhood doesn’t want you anymore They subsidize the trash sold at the store While you serve the men who bought the place next door They’ll close the dives that kept you alive because of the kick drum We found a place where we felt safe on the outside Ten miles south from the heart of town, we compromised The children came of age out on the lawn The neighborhood watch made sure that nothing’s wrong But they didn’t like what they heard from teenage songs Making that sound from the underground In love with the kick drum.

The sun bakes the black top road And it shimmers in the Utah heat like a mirage Lost between rides Pooling our change to drink away the fear of the unknown For the freedom of calling every nowhere home Krylon names mark our route From summers north to winters south, we roam. Like the flocks above or the schools beneath We drift along in search of heat and ride through the night Sleeping in the shadows come daylight Thumbs on the desert trail The veins in our nation’s arm I know them well A pin and India ink punctured into skin And it reads “just survive” A reminder that you were here and you’re still alive

about

Torment & Glory Seattle, Washington

The solo project of Brian Cook (Russian Circles, SUMAC, Botch, TAAS)
These are imperfect songs about imperfect people made under imperfect circumstances. Harnessing folk traditions, country storytelling, kosmische drones, punk scrappiness, and sludgy distortion into a warm, enveloping sound that feels like floating in the womb. ... more
